Viper Timber Grab — Hydraulic Excavator Timber Grab for Forestry & Agricultural Contractors in Northern Ireland, ROI & England

The McElhill Engineering Ltd Viper Timber Grab is a heavy-duty hydraulic excavator timber grab built and supplied from our workshop in Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. Designed for forestry contractors, agricultural contractors, land clearance operators, and sawmill operators across Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and England, the Viper handles logs, timber, brushwood and agricultural materials with a secure, controlled grip on every pass. Available in two excavator sizes — the Viper 1100 for 2 to 6 ton mini and midi excavators and the Viper 1300 for 6 to 13 ton machines — plus two new handheld manual timber grabs, The Claw and The Fang, for use away from the machine. Every excavator grab is built to order with a custom headstock matched exactly to your machine. Hydraulic pipes are included as standard. Unlike cutting attachments, timber grabs carry no government seasonal restriction — the Viper earns all twelve months of the year.

If you are running a forestry or agricultural operation in Northern Ireland or Ireland, you know what it costs when your excavator is sitting idle between seasons. The hedge cutting season closes at the end of February and does not reopen until September. That is six months where a cutting attachment earns nothing. A timber grab changes that. Stack felled timber, shift brushwood, clear sites, handle logs at the sawmill — the Viper Timber Grab puts your excavator to work all year round, no government restriction, no dead time. Built in Fermanagh. Hydraulic pipes included. Custom headstock as standard. Call Gary on 07734 357045 to discuss your machine.

Also Available — The Claw & The Fang: Handheld Manual Timber Grabs

Not every timber handling job needs an excavator. The Claw and The Fang are handheld manual log grabs — no hydraulics, no machine required. Built from Hardox steel in our Fermanagh workshop, they give you a controlled mechanical grip on logs at the woodpile, sawmill, or farm yard. Ideal for firewood handlers, sawmill operators, and anyone moving timber by hand.

The Claw is a compact single four-tine log grab — direct and easy to use. The Fang is a dual-arm design that wraps around the full log for more stability on larger diameter timber. Both are manufactured from Hardox steel to the same standard as our excavator attachments.

The Claw — £70 excl. VAT  |  The Fang — £150 excl. VAT  |  Call 07734 357045 to order.

Workshop Backup — We Built It, We Fix It

Every Viper Timber Grab is manufactured in our own workshop in Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. If anything needs attention after delivery, it comes back to us — the people who built it. No sending it to a distributor who has never seen it before. No waiting on parts from overseas. For forestry and agricultural contractors in Northern Ireland and Ireland who cannot afford machine downtime, that direct workshop relationship is not a nice-to-have — it is essential. Call 07734 357045 to discuss any servicing or repairs.

Common Questions About the Viper Timber Grab

What size timber grab do I need for my excavator?

The Viper 1100 suits excavators from 2 to 6 ton — including popular mini and midi excavators used widely across Northern Ireland and Ireland. The Viper 1300 is built for 6 to 13 ton machines. If you are unsure, call Gary on 07734 357045 with your machine make and model and he will confirm the right size immediately.

Do I need to supply my own hydraulic pipes?

No. Hydraulic pipes are included as standard with every Viper excavator timber grab. When you order, send us your machine measurements and we fabricate the pipes to fit. Nothing extra to source, nothing to guess — it arrives ready to connect.

Will the Viper fit my excavator make and model?

Yes — every Viper headstock is custom fabricated to your excavator's specification. We build to your machine measurements, not to a generic standard. It does not matter what make or model you are running — JCB, Kubota, Volvo, Doosan, CAT, Komatsu or any other brand within the weight range. Send us your measurements when you enquire.

Can I use a timber grab all year round in Ireland?

Yes. Unlike hedge cutting attachments such as saw heads and flail heads, timber grabs are not subject to the government seasonal restriction that runs from 1 March to 31 August. A timber grab can be used every day of the year — stacking and moving felled timber, clearing sites, handling logs at a sawmill or farm yard. This makes the Viper one of the most productive attachments you can add to your excavator.

What is the timber grab made from?

The Viper Timber Grab is built from Hardox steel throughout — an abrasion-resistant high-strength steel used in demanding forestry, quarrying, and industrial applications. Hardox is significantly harder and more wear-resistant than standard mild steel, which means the tines hold their edge longer and the grab maintains its structural integrity under heavy, repeated use.

How long does it take to build and deliver?

All Viper Timber Grabs are built to order in our Fermanagh workshop. Allow approximately 4 to 6 weeks from order to delivery. We deliver by palletised haulage to Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and England. Workshop collection from Fermanagh is also available. Call Gary on 07734 357045 to get your order in the queue.

Do ROI customers pay VAT?

Republic of Ireland customers with a valid VAT number are zero-rated — you do not pay VAT on your order. Provide your VAT number when you enquire and we will zero-rate your invoice. UK customers pay VAT at the standard rate. All prices shown are exclusive of VAT.

What is the difference between The Claw and The Fang?

Both are handheld manual log grabs made from Hardox steel — no excavator or hydraulics needed. The Claw is a compact single four-tine grab, ideal for general log handling at the woodpile or sawmill. The Fang is a dual-arm design that wraps around larger diameter logs more securely, giving better stability when handling heavy timber. The Claw is £70 excl. VAT. The Fang is £150 excl. VAT.

Can I buy a timber grab for a mini excavator under 3 ton?

Yes. The Viper 1100 is suitable for excavators from 2 ton upwards, making it one of the smallest excavator timber grabs in our range. If you are running a compact or mini excavator and need a timber grab that is properly matched to your machine — not oversized and overweight — the Viper 1100 is built for that. Call 07734 357045 to discuss your machine.

VAT: All prices are exclusive of VAT. VAT is added for UK customers. Republic of Ireland customers with a valid VAT number do not pay VAT — provide your VAT number when ordering and we will zero-rate your invoice.
